Odia Wikipedia community is ready to organize the new round of Wikipedia Asian Month for the month of November. This year Odia Wikipedia is joining the Wikipedia Asian Month for the second time as a language partner to write about topics related to Asia in Odia language. Wikipedians contributing to Odia Wikipedia can join and edit articles in this edit-a-thon.

Wikipedia Asian Month is an initiative started in 2015 aiming to bring the Wikimedia Communities in Asia together to improve articles about Asian countries on different language Wikipedias. Throughout the month of November, many Wikimedia affiliate, and different language Wikipedias will take part in an online edit-a-thon, encouraging Wikipedians to create articles on various topics.

One of the articles I translated during the last Asian Month Edit-a-thon was on Japanese mythology. Considering the culture-specific words in that article, translating it into Odia was a very refreshing experience for me, says Prateek Patnaik. Prateek is a student, and he volunteers for Odia Wikipedia and Wikisource. He also adds, “The Asian Month Edit-a-thon was nice to take part in. Though I was involved in Wikipedia before, the Asian Month Edit-a-thon was one of the first edit-a-thons I’d taken part in. It opened up a new side of Wikipedia.”

In 2016, Odia Wikipedia was among the 50 languages to join the Wikipedia Asian Month. Around 26 articles were created as a part of the edit-a-thon by 9 users in the month of November.

I have already selected some topics to write in this edit-a-thon, says Aliva Sahoo, an active contributor to Odia Wikipedia and WAM 2016 Ambassador,  It is exciting to write about other countries, which helped me to know about their culture, places and many other things. Also receiving a postcard from a foreign country encourages in participating in this online edit-a-thon.”

Earlier this year, the community collaborated with the Sports and Youth Services department of Government of Odisha to release images of 2017 Asian Athletics Championships under CC-BY-SA 4.0, around 300 images were uploaded to Commons. The Odia community members are excited to use those images in creating articles on Asian athletes and encourages other Wikipedians to use the images in this year’s Wikipedia Asian Month.
